Labor Responds to Workplace Change
- Do you know what is available to assist union members who need a GED, ESL, basic skills, or other training?
- Does your union have a program in place to address the possibility of layoffs or a plant closing?
- LEAP is the innovative partnership between the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development that addresses these and many other important issues facing today’s unions.
- LEAP was designed to ensure unions and their members are knowledgeable, proactive and prepared for all manner of workplace change:
1. Job expansion and retention;
2. Effective use of the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development services, including the Rapid Response Team;
3. Early warning signs of layoffs and plant closings;
4. Strategic planning;
5. Member advocacy in job and career transition in response to a mass layoff or plant closing;
- Hundreds of union leaders and members statewide have participated in LEAP programs and training, and thousands of union members have benefited from the assistance LEAP trained Peer Counselors provide.
- There is no charge for LEAP services, and there are funds available to reimburse LEAP training attendees for lost wages.

“Our union’s LEAP Peer Counselors assisted the local in our response, and encouraged the members to participate in all the activities and services provided. As difficult as the plant closing was, members felt hopeful and were surprised at how much help was available for them.”
