CONGRATULATIONS to the New Senate President, Steve Sweeney
On behalf of the one-million members of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO, we proudly congratulate the new Senate President, Steve Sweeney who took the oath of office today before a packed audience at the Statehouse during the First Annual Session of the 214th Session of the New Jersey Legislature. Senate President Sweeney is a union member from Iron Workers 399, a General Organizer for the Iron Workers International Union, and the Freeholder Director for the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

The 213th New Jersey State Legislative Session officially came to a close today at noon. The end of the 2008/2009 session was followed by a swearing-in ceremony for new legislative leadership and Governor Corzine’s “State of the State” speech.
In addition to Sweeney taking the oath as Senate President, on the Senate side of the Legislature, Senator Barbara Buono was the first woman in state history to be sworn-in as the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Nia Gill became the President Pro Tempore, and Senator Tom Kean was once again sworn-in as Senate Minority Leader.
In the Assembly, Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver was sworn-in as Assembly Speaker becoming the first African American woman to hold the position, Assemblyman Joe Cryan became the Assembly Majority Leader, and Alex DeCroce was once again sworn-in as Assembly Minority Leader.
