We need to convey to our representatives that health care reform should:
· NOT tax workers health benefits.
· Require employers to pay their fair share.
· Include a public option to control health care costs.
Health care reform is in the final stage of negotiation, and this is one of our last chances to make key changes to the legislation. Earlier this week national AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, along with several international union presidents, met with President Obama to discuss important improvements to the legislation.
In merging the Senate and House bills, we want to achieve a bill that more closely resembles the House version. The House bill is financed without a tax on the middle class, it ensures that employers have a shared responsibility for insuring their workers, and it includes a public option to promote affordability.
Unfortunately, the bill being favored by legislators now is the Senate bill, which taxes the middle class, gives employers a free-ride, and eliminates the public option. We must make our voice heard and let Congress know that we want reform that works for the middle class.
