The New Jersey State AFL-CIO Celebrates Women’s History Month

March is National Women’s History Month, and the New Jersey State AFL-CIO is proud to join with working families to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of women in our state and nation.

To this day, much of women’s history remains unwritten. However, National Women’s History Month provides a valuable opportunity to recognize prominent women leaders as well as those left out of the history books. From lessons in the classroom to community and statewide events, this month will provide working families with an important perspective on the significant role of women in our society and culture.

As we recognize the past achievements of women, we must also work to highlight present day accomplishments and activists. The traditional roles of women have changed and continue to change at home and at work. Women are now major contributors to family incomes and in more and more cases will act as the primary source of income. Although women are likely to outnumber men in the workplace in the coming years, women, on average, earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was signed into law by President Obama, will help to bridge the pay gap between the men and women and ensure that women are not disadvantaged in our economy by wage discrimination.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO looks forward to commemorating Women’s History Month, as well as hosting the Women in Leadership Development Conference (WILD) from March 19-20, 2010. WILD brings together union women from all different walks of life to focus on empowerment through mentoring, self-care, and communication.
