Rally to Protect Children's Health Care

On Thursday, October 11, join the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and Bergen County Central Labor Council as we unite with Senators Lautenberg and Menendez for a rally calling on all members of Congress to make overriding a veto on the State Children's Health Insurance Program a priority when they go back to Washington. The rally will be held at the Garfield Health Center at 535 Midland Avenue in Garfield at 2:00 pm.
On October 3, President Bush vetoed the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), despite bipartisan support and popularity among a majority of Americans. The expansion of SCHIP will provide health coverage for more than 10 million children across the county. With nearly 9 million uninsured children in the United States, we should be doing more to protect them, not less.
SCHIP was passed with bipartisan support from both the Senate and House of Representatives, but while the Senate margin was veto proof, the House vote fell short of the two thirds to override a veto. With this veto, Bush refused to listen to many leading Republican lawmakers who joined nearly every Democrat in the House and Senate in supporting reauthorization of the program.
Now it's time for working families to be heard on this important issue. Be sure to be there for this extremely important rally. Please join us as we send a clear message that all of NJ’s Congressional Delegation should vote to override President Bush’s Veto.
