Thousands in New Jersey Show Support for IBEW and CWA During March 22nd Day of Action

The March 22nd National Day of Action at Verizon was a tremendous success thanks the outpouring of support generated by union members across all sectors of the labor movement. Hundreds of our brothers and sisters rallied at the Verizon Headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, to call on Verizon to end its attack on middle class jobs and to bargain fairly with its workers. Hundreds more leafleted at over a dozen Verizon stores across the state to educate the public about Verizon’s greed and the harmful demands it is placing on its workers.

The activities in New Jersey were complimented by actions across the nation seeking to generate support for the 45,000 members of IBEW and CWA who are fighting for a fair contract. Verizon is demanding workers pay even more for health benefits and is trying to eliminate middle class jobs despite making billions of dollars in profits, paying top five executives $283 million in the last four years, and paying no federal corporate income taxes from 2008-2010.

Verizon’s actions are unacceptable and represent a blanket attack on our middle class way of life. Union members who took action across New Jersey realized that this fight is about supporting our brothers and sisters as much as it is about supporting ourselves. As we continue the fight for a fair contract, we will continue to grow in strength and resolve, knowing that our middle class depends on the ability of working men and women to achieve fair wages and fair treatment at their workplace.

We thank our Central Labor Councils for coordinating leafleting at Verizon stores and our many affiliates and community partners who lent their support to the cause. We look forward to your continued support as we continue to fight for a fair contract.
