LABOR DAY 2012: Honor Labor for Building Our Nation’s Middle Class

We are a great country because of our labor movement. The labor movement built a strong American middle class by standing for social and economic justice and embracing the concept that workers should earn “a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work”. By having a voice at work, union workers are able to bargain for a middle class lifestyle which in turn strengthens our communities and lifts up all other workers.

Being part of a union is about respect on the job and achieving a dignified standard of living. Union members believe in working hard, but also having the ability to spend quality time with our families and to enjoy leisure time with friends. Union members believe in an economic system that gives a fair chance at the American Dream to anyone who works hard, puts in the time, and plays by the rules. These are not just union values; they are middle class American values. Union members also believe in giving back to the community.

On Labor Day, let us celebrate all of these shared union values, by spending some quality time with our families, friends and neighbors and honoring the work that we do. To our union family, friends, and allies: Happy Labor Day.
