PAID FAMILY LEAVE LEGISLATION APPROVED BY THE SENATE BUDGET & APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE

On Monday, January 28, 2008, the Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee voted 8-6 to release S-786 (Sweeney/Buono) legislation, establishing a Paid Family Leave Insurance program. The vote was mostly along party lines, with all Republican Senators (Anthony Bucco, Phillip Haines, Leonard Lance, Kevin O’Toole and Steven Oroho) voting no, and Democrats Barbara Buono, Paul Sarlo, Sandra Cunningham, Dana Redd, Teresa Ruiz, Brian Stack, Stephen Sweeney and Joseph Vitale voting yes. Senator Shirley Turner (D-15) voted against the bill. The New Jersey State AFL-CIO strongly supports this pro-family legislation and thanks those Senators that voted in favor of it, as well as all member organizations of the New Jersey Partnership for Working Families Coalition and all affiliates that are pushing for the enactment of this bill.
