“One year since the deadly virus shut down the casinos, the need is still great,” he said, “but we will never let our members or the community down.”
The food distribution on Thursday, sponsored by the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and its affiliates, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, served nearly 2,000 laid-off casino industry workers and other members of the Atlantic City community at Bader Field’s former airstrip.
“This pandemic has only strengthened the spirit of solidarity of our volunteers and the union members who come here,” President Wowkanech said. “They know we are here for them, not only with food, but also with encouragement, information and advice. This has become a community in itself.”
Volunteers from IATSE, IUOE, UNITE HERE and NYSNA/Shore Nurses devoted their day to checking in recipients and loading their cars with food kits.
“Our union volunteers have been steadfast in their dedication to their community of labor and neighbors,” President Wowkanech said. “They have given a year of their lives to the success of this much-needed program, and we are deeply grateful.”
