Montclair, NJ – The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council opened its first-ever New Jersey
office in Montclair today at noon. Workers at 10 New Jersey hotels voted to ratify their
contracts between the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council and their employers.
“By voting to ratify these contracts, these workers are winning significantly higher
wages for themselves, affordable healthcare for their families, and a pension plan that
will see them through retirement. All will make more under their union contract than
they did before, and some will see wage increases of up to 40% over their previous
wage” said Hotel and Gaming Trades Council President Richard Maroko. “It’s a rare
day that a union can ratify ten contracts in one day; the road to even one contract can
be long and arduous. This unprecedented triumph is built on the hard work of our
organizers and the courage of these workers. We will have more victories yet, and I am
confident we will be celebrating more contract ratifications and more new union
members soon.”
The union’s rapid growth in recent years, even through the COVID-19 pandemic, has
enabled the union to take a more active role in the State and in the communities where
its members live and work. The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, which represents
40,000 hotel and gaming workers in New Jersey and New York, has been active in
New Jersey for less than a decade, but already represents 57 hotels and 6,000 New
Jersey residents.
