In partnership with the national AFL-CIO and historical societies, the New Jersey State AFL-CIO honors African Americans who have made a significant impact in the labor and civil rights movements. We hope you meet them all.
Today: A. Philip Randolph, one of the greatest black labor leaders in America’s history and a key founder of the modern American civil rights movement. He organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first predominantly African American labor union, and served as the organization’s first president.
