“Fair Price Protection Act” Signed Into Law
The New Law Will Preserve Supermarket Jobs and Ban Predatory Pricing on Groceries
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO thanks Governor Sherrill for signing into law today legislation that will protect consumers from predatory pricing practices at supermarkets. With affordability being the number one concern for households throughout the state, this law will ensure that costs on basic products can no longer be manipulated to take advantage of shoppers. A-4085 (Onyema / Quijano / Sampson / Speight / Bailey / Bagolie / Cryan / Lagana) also enacts a one-year moratorium on electronic shelf labels (ESL). These labels, combined with predatory pricing practices, allow supermarkets to instantly change prices based upon consumer data. Furthermore, this work is currently done by UFCW members, and the future of their employment is at risk due to this technology. Self-checkout lanes have already decimated the supermarket workforce, and ESL will put push more of our members out of a job.
