The Act would help secure our public Postal Service’s finances by removing the unfair prefunding mandate that forces the Postal Service to pay now for retirees’ health benefits 75 years into the future.
Earlier this month the House of Representatives passed its version of the bill with a huge bipartisan two-thirds majority. If we work together, we can win in the Senate too.
And we need to win this fight. The Postal Service is a source of good union jobs and it is a community anchor in towns and cities across America. It’s up to us to protect our public Postal Service.
In 2006, Congress saddled our public Postal Service with an unfair and unsustainable burden of pre-funding retiree health care benefits for 75 years into the future! No other private company or public organization has to do this. This has been used to cut good union jobs and service cuts and as a pretext for privatization.
The USPS Fairness Act (S-2965) would put the Postal Service back onto a sustainable path for our communities by repealing that mandate. It’s up to us to build support and get this passed to save our public Postal Service.
