Today the officers of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO, President Charles Wowkanech and Secretary Treasurer Laurel Brennan, walked in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the ILA, who are currently striking, as they fight for a fair and just contract with the ocean carriers represented by the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX.) Instrumental in maintaining the economy, longshoremen complete the challenging task of loading and unloading cargo each day, with some workers working as many as 100 hours a week. Managing harsh and even dangerous working conditions, the ILA workers are asking for industry-leading wages and robust job protections.
“At the New Jersey State AFL-CIO, we hope for a swift and equitable resolution for the ILA workers soon. The over 45,000 members of the ILA deserve fair benefits and wages that reflect the indispensable value of their work,” said President Wowkanech.
