The New Jersey State AFL-CIO Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we celebrate a civil rights leader who dedicated his career to ensuring that all Americans are treated with respect and dignity. His lifelong fight to guarantee that everyone has the right to exercise their fundamental rights and freedoms as enshrined in the Constitution, is a reminder of the importance of persistence, determination, and above all unity.

Dr. King played an important role in the history of our labor movement. Through his work, Dr. King led the charge to desegregate unions, promote people of color into union leadership positions, and facilitated greater collaboration between labor and the Civil Rights Movement. He was an active participant in the labor movement, as he walked picket lines and advocated for our affiliated unions, supporting them in their fight for equity.

Today we continue to uphold the legacy of Dr. King, as we ensure that progress continues to be made for all working people. Together, we will guarantee that all workers are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
